In total, approximately 3,600 volunteers will work various jobs at the course, while the likes of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson hit the links and vie for the second major of the season. Dozens more are on a waiting list.
The volunteers each paid a $175 fee and will work a minimum of four shifts of four hours each. However, they gain unlimited access to the tournament, food vouchers, free parking and preferred registration to volunteer for the Ryder Cup, which is heading to Bethpage Black in 2024.
Of those volunteers, approximately 850 will man a massive 60,000-square-foot PGA Shops merchandising tent that has been open since last week featuring “men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel and headwear from major brands including Ralph Lauren, Nike, Adidas, Cutter & Buck, Under Armour, FootJoy, Peter Millar, Vineyard Vines, 47 Brand, New Era, and many more! The PGA Shops also offers a major selection of exclusive accessories, gifts and memorabilia.”
Other volunteers have been instructed to work the leader board, perform laser operations and help transporting guests from hole-to-hole on the course. According to reports, the volunteers come from 45 states and 20 different nations as far as the Philippines. An estimated 75 percent come from Long Island.
Bryan Weiss, 36, will be volunteering at the tournament for the first time. The Levittown resident will spend the week going back and forth to Farmingdale and will be working in the merchandise tent.
“It makes for a surprisingly long day, but it’s a literal labor of love,” he said. “It’s work, but not really work, if that makes sense. It’s just all about being around the atmosphere and there’s a certain buzz in the air if you love golf, and we all love golf. I’m just looking forward to the weekend.”
